Rules of the Académie d'Armes Internationale for the World Championships in Stage / Artistic Fencing

AAI                                           Académie d'Armes Internationale

A brief summary of the AAI Congress - 5th September 2008

A minute silence was held in remembrance of the passing of former AAI President, Niccola Perno.

A resolution was passed to allow Academies with only Escrime Artistic members to be admitted to the AAI.

It was resolved to amend the Statutes to allow Academy representatives who were competent in one discipline only (i.e. Sport or Artistic) would only be permitted to vote on motions relating to their specific area of competence.

A motion was passed to allow single weapon Masters.  The title for Masters of three weapons was to historically remain as Maitre d'Armes while single weapon Masters will be Maitre d'Arme Fleuret / Epee / Sabre.

A proposal by the President to allow Prevots and Moniteurs to become members of the AAI was approved on condition that only Masters could represent Academies at Congress.

The question was raised as to who could give "official" AAI training camps and who could award AAI certificates. It was of the opinion that AAI certificates should be recognised by every member Academy, but in order to maintain the value of AAI certificates it was necessary that each Academy maintain tight control over who can run these training camps/examinations for them to be designated AAI training camps/examinations.  The credibility that an AAI certificate gives is a valuable asset and as such we must maintain an acceptably high standard.  For example a Coach who has just become a Master needs several years of involvement in training camps and sitting on examination boards before being sufficiently experienced and competent to award an AAI certificate.  It was agreed that each Academy produce a short list of experienced Masters to be accredited to run camps and award AAI certificates and provide details of their coaching education program.

Official AAI T-shirts with the AAI flag and title of Maitre d'Armes inscribed (or other title as appropriate) were now available in light blue or navy blue at a price of 12 euro each, plus shipping.  Order in sizes Medium, Large, or Extra Large.        Contact: Maitre Gary Worsfield 0419773317 or gary@fencingonline.com to place your orders.

A Special Meeting of the AAF was convened at Prof. Mike O'Brien's residence in Kenmore on Sunday 26th April 2009.  In attendance were Maitre Gary Worsfield (Chairman), Prévot Tynan Worsfield and Simon Leitch while, stuck in traffic was Ramon, Moniteur Joseph Del Vecchio (Minute Secretary) and Aaron Jordan.

1.   History of the Academy to where we are today.  2.   Discussion of the recent changes adopted by the AAI and how they can impact on the Australian Academy.   3.    What we need to do as an Administration - a revival strategy / development plan     4.    Hold annual Examinations - AAI Certificates can be issued at the appropriate levels (moniteur, prevot, maitre déscrime and maitre dármes) along with a Masters' competition - this year can be the selection for the 2010 World Fencing Masters Championships tentatively hosted by Sweden.

Further discussion starts formulating a plan that consists of  4 Examination/Assessment Weekends.  One weekend devoted to each discipline - foil, epee, sabre and artistic fencing.  One Weekend at the end of each school term.  Each Review and Examination Weekend will consist of one day of workshops, reviewing the examination criteria and levels of competency, and another day of practical examination, giving and taking lessons, fencing and officiating on the electrical scoring apparatus.
