Since
1967 Gary's life has been involved in fencing; as a fencer,
nationally graded and internationally experienced competitor,
president d'jury, armourer, technical official, sports
administrator, instructor, coach and fencing master. Gary was
originally taught fencing and fencing coaching from Maître John
Fethers (World finalist at the first electric foil World
Championships in 1955) and was later coached by Maître Joseph Gyuricza
(World Champion 1955),
Prof. Zbigniew Czajkowski (Polish National Coach and
World pioneer of fencing instruction), Maîtres' Barry Moore (British
Team Coach and New Zealand National Coach), Steven
Vamos, Manuel Guittet and Jean-Pierre Le Coz (Canadian National Coach), Prof. Michael
O'Brien (Australian National Coach), and Prof. Bob Anderson (Senior British
National Coach and "guru" of Motion Picture swordfight
choreography). Gary is a graduate Coach
of the Coaching Association of Canada's National Coaching Certification
Program (level 3) and Course Conductor (teacher of coaches) for the
technical (sport-specific) and practical levels (1, 2, 3). He is a level
3 Coach of the Australian Sports Commission National Coaching
Accreditation Scheme, a Maître d'Armes (Master of Arms) of
The Fencing Academy of Canada-Académie d'Armes du Canada, Member of
the Académie d'Armes Internationale and Director of the
Australian
Academy of Fencing. |
Gary's fencing coaching experiences range
from teaching kids as young as 5 years to aged pensioners in their late 70's, and training them to elite levels of performance within their respective age categories
at State-Provincial, National, International, World Championships & Games. Gary practices a coaching ethos, an esprit de vivre, that strives
towards reaching one's potential in the pursuit of excellence. A philosophy of personal achievement emphasizing
the joy of learning over the desire of winning.

"Jeremy Sumpter IS Peter Pan, and one of the most likeable
and talented teenagers I've been fortunate to teach. If it's fun, he'll
learn it well, and once learnt, he's able to recall complex sequences of
swordfight choreography months after they had been filmed. Jeremy is
amazing with the sword flips and tricks, as you'll see in the movie.
He did all his own sword fighting, quite remarkable
considering he was only thirteen at the time!"
