FENCING MEMORABILIA Female & Fencing Poster |
The irony of it, is that this poster advertises fencing as one of the sporting events of the 1900 World Exposition held in Paris France. This was only 4 years after the start of the modern Olympic Games (1896) where fencing was one of the original sports. Although a woman is used to advertise all three of the fencing disciplines (foil, epee and sabre) at that time they were not permitted to fence any of them in competition. It was not until the 1924 Paris Olympics before women were to compete in foil (with modified rules) and then it wasn’t until just before the end of the 20th century that women were to compete in epee (again initially with modified rules) and only quite recently as we progress into the 21st century are women now competing in all three weapons. It has taken almost an entire century for women to be able to compete equally as men in the sport of fencing. This historically significant laminated poster measuring 11.5" x 16.5" (29cm x 42cm) is available for only $25. Packing & Australia Post postage, insurance & handling extra: $7.00 in Australia or $10.00 outside Australia. |
